The Jacksonville Jaguars intend to let the contract of Maurice Jones-Drew expire so the running back can test free agency in 2014. The New York Giants and Cleveland Browns could be possible suitors for the Pro Bowler, Rant.com reports.
Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said on Tuesday he plans on letting Jones-Drew hit the free agent market in March, according to ESPN. Caldwell said he doesn't anticipate re-signing the running back before seeing what other teams offer the 28-year-old.
Although Jones-Drew said he'd like to finish his career in Jacksonville, he did admit money would be a factor in his decision. Caldwell declined to elaborate on how much the Jaguars would be willing to pay Jones-Drew.
"I think he'll leave that up to his representation in terms of finding him the best value for his deal," Caldwell said on Tuesday, via ESPN. "I'm not pessimistic at all about it. I think he's earned the right to go to free agency. He's been a great player in this organization and he's had a great career and I think he's earned the right to go see what his value and his market is.
"It's our right to decide if we want to match it and bring him back."
Possible destinations for Jones-Drew are the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns, according to Rant.com. The Dallas Cowboys have also been mentioned as a possible suitor.
Jones-Drew, a second-round pick in the 2006 NFL draft, has struggled in the recent seasons to stay healthy. He's rushed for 8,071 yards and has a franchise-best 81 touchdowns.
