Tikker: Former Gravedigger Invents Death Watch to Countdown Life

Fredrik Colting, 37, a former gravedigger from Sweden has launched a Kickstarter campaign for “Tikker”—a wrist watch that counts down life.

This new wrist watch is not your typical watch that simply tells the time and not even close to a smartwatch fully loaded with applications but it claims to make its wearer happy and motivated to create a better world.

Colting, who is now based in Los Angeles, Calif., decided to create a watch that counts down your life until its last second to make the world a better place and encourage people to make every second count. He was inspired in creating the watch after the death of his grandfather which changed how he perceives death and life.

“I think that if we are aware of death, and our own expiration, that we will have a greater appreciation for life,” Colting said in an interview with ABC News. “Some people have gone through near-death experiences, or survived serious illnesses and they come out of it with a new way to look at life. They no longer sweat the small stuff, but are simply happy to be alive.”

So how does the Tikker death watch works? The wearer will be asked to fill out a questionnaire linked to a common algorithm used by the government to compute for a person’s life expectancy. After the age is encoded, the countdown will begin.

The Tikker death watch will be available in the market beginning April 2014 for $79. Colting told ABC News that they have received thousands of pre-orders not only from the U.S but also from other countries including France, Brazil, Vietnam, Russia, and more. It has also attracted buyers from teens to retired people.

The kickstarter campaign has successfully ended on November 2 with 2,162 backers and has raised $98,665 in 32 days.
