The NBA regular season has not officially started yet. But the New York Knicks' newest start acquisition Derrick Rose is already involved in a controversy.
On Friday, Rose testified in lawsuit against a rape case accusing him and two of his friends in raping his ex-girlfriend. Rose said that he interpreted a text messsage from the 30-year-old woman as a consent to have sex with her that night.
According to Chicago Tribune, Rose was called to the witness stand by a lawyer for the woman. During the testimony, he said that he had split up with his ex-girlfriend before their meet-up in August 2013. He also said that she also texted him that day saying that he is the reason why his ex-girlfriend "wakes up horny."
Rose said that on that night, he invited her to his mansion in Beverly Hills and expected sex would be invloved.
Rose testified that the girl came to his house, had a shot of tequila. He said that she started coming to him but she rebuffed thinking that the girl is getting too aggressive. After that, one of his friends took her out of the room.
Rose said that he walked outside and saw his friend and ex-girlfriend having sex, who pulled him off to join them.
The Associated Press is not naming the girl because it generally does not identify people who say that they are victims of sexual assault.
Rose's defense lawyer is looking at the angle of money for the reason of the lawsuit.
Earlier Friday, the woman undergo a second day of cross-examination. The lawyer of Rose questioned the girl's motive for filing a lawsuit case suggesting she sued to get money.
"I didn't wish him any harm, I wanted him to be accountable," she said, denying she did it for money, per Foxsports.
The woman was also questioned for seeking for $21.5 million from Rose. And why her first text message for Rose after that incident were about reimbursing for cab fare and a "sex belt" she had given him.
Her respond was vague. But she later on explained that she brought up the money so that the NBA veteran would respond to her.
The NBA star's lawyer use strings of messages to doubt the woman's story and whether she even drank enough to black out hours later.
Derrick Rose is already entering in his 9th year in the NBA averaging 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists in 406 games, per wikipedia. Now that he is in New York, he wants to prove that he can still play at a very high level. Can this rape case lawsuit against him affect his game?
