South Carolina Murder Suspect, Jason Mark Carter, Escapes From Mental Institution

A murder suspect accused of killing his mother and stepfather escaped from a mental facility in South Carolina on Thursday, the New York Daily News reported.

Jason Mark Carter, 39, eluded authorities in the morning at the unnamed institution he was staying at, located in Columbia, and is still missing.

According to ABC, he may have escaped the building in a stolen white Chevy van with a tag of SG61580 and the number 244 on the bumper. It was also reported that Carter was working for a supply company in the hospital prior to his escape.

The Oconee County Sheriff's Office said they are unsure of how Carter escaped but mentioned he's highly dangerous.

"We just want Mr. Carter returned to the facility. We don't want anyone hurt," said Jimmy Watt, spokesman for the Oconee County sheriff's office.

Carter has been institutionalized since 2009 after being declared unfit to stand trial for the killings of mother, 51-year-old Debra Perkins, and stepfather, 57-year-old Kevin Perkins.

In 2006, the couple was discovered fatally shot and wrapped in plastic underneath a bed mattress in a basement. According to press releases, Carter was reportedly standing over them when authorities found the bodies.

A judge later ruled that he was not sure if Carter could distinguish right from wrong and sentenced him to a mental institution.

He is described as 5-feet-10-inches tall and 165 pounds with hazel eyes and brown hair. The sheriff's office said he was last seen in a black coat with a black and white sweater underneath and brown cargo pants.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the sheriff's office at (864) 638 - 4111, Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, or the local police department.
