Chinese Authorities Seize Three Tons Of Crystal Meth In Village Raid; Nearly 200 Arrested

Chinese authorities seized three tons of crytal methamphetamine on Sunday following the raid of a village notorious for drugs, NBC News reported.

At least 182 people were arrested, including some village officials according to local media outlets.

A statement released on Thursday by the provincial public security department claims the Boshe village is responsible for at least a third of the country's crystal meth supply. Officials also said that more than 20 percent of residents in Boshe -- located in Guangdong -- are connected to drug production and/or trafficking rings.

"The village has made a criminal drug production a clan-based, industrialized operation with local protection,"' police said.

"The offenders have for a long time been brazenly committing crimes, avoiding investigations and even ganging up to violently oppose law enforcement."

Though police have not disclosed the amount the drugs were worth, the South China Morning Post claims the meth -- also known as "ice" -- is worth $232 in Hong Kong.

The Xinhua news agency reported that 22 tons of raw material used for making drugs was also seized by authorities. Since the beginning of their "Thunder Operations" launched on July 30, Guangdong police have arrested 10,836 suspects and taken nine tons of drugs.

After heroin, methamphetamine is China's second most used narcotic.

According to The Globe and Mail, authorities used helicopters and speedboats for the operation, noting that the use of so many resources is rare for the country's law enforcement.
