Google has acquired a Zurich-based app developing company, Bitspin, and has made a popular alarm app free in Google Play Store.
Google is on a shopping spree, yet again. This time the web giant has acquired Bitspin, the maker of a popular Android alarm clock app Timely. The Zurich-based company made the official announcement of the acquisition on its website. As a result of the deal, the popular paid Android alarm app in Google Play Store is now available for free.
"We're thrilled to announce that Bitspin is joining Google, where we'll continue to do what we love: building great products that are delightful to use, Bitspin wrote in the company's website. "For new and existing users, Timely will continue to work as it always has. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded our app and provided feedback along the way; we truly appreciate all your support."
Timely is an Android alarm app for smartphones and tablets, which has received a positive 4.4 -star rating on Google Play Store by over 45,000 reviewers. The app offers extreme customization options with a changeable interface, colorful themes, designer clocks and unique alerts. The app also challenges users with a math problem before dismissing an alarm to ensure the user is really awake.
The Timely alarm app can recognize phone movements, like flipping the phone snoozes the alarm and lifting the phone while the alarm is ringing, reduces the volume automatically. The app will continue its offerings and services indefinitely and the acquisition does not change the Timely experience in any way.
Bitspin is run by a small team of developers from ETH (Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule) Zurich, along with two former Google+ interns.
Google has recently made several acquisitions for various projects. Just last month, the web giant took over Boston Dynamics for its secretive Robotics Initiative led by former Android head, Andy Rubin. Other acquisitions include Flutter in October last year, Waze in last June and Bump in September that will be shut down on January 31.
