No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 Auburn play in the last ever BCS Championship on Monday. Florida State (13-0) surprised many with its terrific regular-season run behind the arm of redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston.
Winston, the winner of the 2014 Heisman, helped guide the Seminoles to an undefeated regular season while completing 67.9 percent of his passes for 3,820 yards, 38 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.
While he lit up the scoreboard on offense, Florida State's top-ranked defense kept opponents to an average of 10.7 points per game. Junior nose tackle Timmy Jernigan anchored the 3-4 defense, which tallied 33 sacks and 25 interceptions, according to ESPN.
"When you have those guys on defense, especially that can control that middle, it makes everyone around you so much better," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said of Jernigan, via ESPN. "He makes two other guys great because he takes the double-team and the stuff you have to do to block him and account for him."
Auburn (12-1) is this year's Cinderella story after its dramatic turnaround from last season's 3-9 record. The Tigers boasted two players who rushed for over 1,000 yards: junior quarterback Nick Marshall with 1,023 yards and junior halfback Tre Mason with 1,621 yards.
After a dismal season last year, Auburn is savoring every second of playing on college football's biggest stage.
"You just have to embrace the moment," said Marshall. "Just seize the moment of being in the championship game, period. It doesn't come too often, so when you're in it you just have to make the best of it."
