Nintendo's next gaming system isn't a home console or a portable machine-it's both. The Japanese company has been teasing its next console for a pretty long time. It had codenamed the NX.
But a few days ago (October 20), it finally revealed some info about the follow-up to its underwhelming Nintendo Wii U gaming system. The console's name is the Nintendo Switch that will be released in March 2017, according to a video the company released. The price, however, is is not yet revealed.
Nintendo's fans already know that the company is trying to fight for its place under the electronic gaming by focusing on both home consoles and handheld systems. The Nintendo Switch will be the first gaming system to combine those two worlds.
Nintendo has had massive successes in the past with its household systems like the Nintendo 64 and the Wii, as well as with DX consoles and portable Game Boy. However, Microsoft and Sony are dominating the home console market in recent years letting Nintendo fight against smartphones for the casual portable gaming market. The Japanese company released its first mobile games this year.
When talking about the Switch, it appears that it's a system designed for gamers who want a Nintendo console at home but also something that allows them to play the same games on the go.
The gaming system actually comprises a dock, a tablet and removable controllers that slide on and off the tablet, either allowing the player to control the system wirelessly. Also, the Switch is plugged into a tv, or connected to the tablet. According to the video, it also has a little kickstand so players can play to their favorite content while sitting on a plane.
It remains to be seen whether this sort of console will be popular, considering the fracturing nature of the gaming market between mobile games and powerful home systems. Nintendo has notedly succeeded in playing on their strongest card--multiplayer games.
