With New Year's resolutions still in place, many people are looking for new diets.
U.S. News & World Report has released their "Best Diets 2014," a PR newswire release said.
"Best Diets 2014 is designed to help consumers identify a diet that suits their specific needs, whether they are trying to lose weight, control a chronic disease or achieve a healthier lifestyle overall," Angela Haupt, health & wellness editor for U.S. News said in the statement. "We assembled top experts and developed the tools and rankings to provide a resource for the thousands of Americans struggling to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle."
The DASH diet won the top spot for "Best Diet Overall," followed by the TLC diet, the Mediterranean Diet, Weight Watchers, and the Mayo Clinic Diet.
This is the fourth year the DASH diet has won the title. It also won the top spots in the "Best Diabetes Diet" and "Best Diet for Healthy Eating" categories.
"The DASH diet eating plan is a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, low fat or nonfat dairy. It also includes grains, especially whole grains; lean meats, fish and poultry; nuts and beans. It is high fiber and low to moderate in fat. It is a plan that follows [U.S.] guidelines for sodium content. In addition to lowering blood pressure, the DASH eating plan lowers cholesterol and makes it easy to lose weight. It is a healthy way of eating, designed to be flexible enough to meet the lifestyle and food preferences of most people. And, it contains all the healthy foods from the Mediterranean diet," the DASH website states.
Weight Watchers won for "Best Weight Loss Diet," as well as "Easiest Diets to Follow" and "Best Commercial Diet Plans."
The Mediterranean Diet won for "Best Plant-Based Diet" and the ornish diet stole the gold for "Best Heart-Healthy Diets."
