Kraft Foods released a statement on Tuesday warning cheese dip fans they might not be able to find the product on shelves due to a shortage, the Associated Press reported.
Jodi Moore, a Kraft Foods representative, did not give any specific reason for the shortage besides the "nature of manufacturing," which causes an occasional seasonal shortage, the AP reported.
"It is possible consumers may not be able to find some Velveeta products on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore said in an email on Tuesday. "This is really a short-term issue that's more noticeable right now given the increased seasonal demand. We have not heard many complaints from consumers so far."
Twitter blew up with reports that some east coast grocery chains would not be carrying the cheesey product until February, but Moore said Kraft has not received many customer complaints about difficulty in finding the product yet, according to Reuters.
In response to reports, Kraft told Ad Age that a demand for drivers were among the "combination of factors" causing the shortage, according to CBS.
Others claim Kraft using the scarcity tactic and is geniously staging the shortage right before the high-demand season for the product in order to generate sales, CBS reported.
She added the shortage is short term and is mostly noticeable due to the high demand for Velveeta during football season where cheese dip made with the product is a popular dish, the AP reported. The company has been airing commercials with a chili con queso recipe made with Velveeta.
The reports began on Tuesday when Ad Age quoted a Brooklyn grocery store employee who said they were not expecting shipments of Velveeta until February due to "a plant issue," the AP reported.
