The 2014 class promises to be intriguing. Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas, Mike Mussina, Jeff Kent and Tom Glavine join a talented list of Cooperstown candidates that includes Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, Edgar Martinez and Jeff Bagwell, MLB.com reports.
Although there hasn't ever been a unanimously elected Hall of Famer, some believe Maddux at least has the chance of going to Cooperstown in his first year of eligibility.
"I know there's been no unanimous [electee] in the history to the Hall of Fame, but I think [Maddux] would be if there is," former Braves pitcher John Smoltz told MLB.com. "I'm biased. I watched Greg and Tom pitch my whole career, basically. They exemplified the fact that over 162 games, they were better than anybody else in the league."
Maddux, who retired with 355 wins, is excited about the possibility of being inducted to the Hall of Fame with Glavine and Bobby Cox, who both were with him in Atlanta.
"Those guys were a big part of my baseball career, both Bobby and Glav," said Maddux. "To be able to share something with them again would be that much more special. You're always rooting for the best for your teammates and your ex-teammates. Whatever happens, happens. I'll be happy for both of them regardless of what happens. Just to be considered is an honor."
Glavine is another first-year candidate who has a legitimate chance of making the Hall of Fame in his first try. Managers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Cox were selected for Cooperstown on Dec. 9 by the Expansion Era Committee.
