Director mulls possible sequel of ‘Dr. Strange’

The much awaited new installment in Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dr. Strange is all set to make its US premiere on Nov. 4.

As per NME, the film has already acquired £9.3 million over the first weekend in UK and also topped the box office. It further reported that a sequel to Dr. Strange is already taking form and several plot ideas are being discussed.

Director of Dr. Strange, Scott Derrickson announced that he wants to introduce the character Nightmare. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Nightmare first appeared in Strange Tales #110 in July 1963, alongside Dr. Strange. He is primarily associated with Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider.

Nightmare is a demonic ruler and his realm is the "Dream Dimension", where troubled humans are brought in during their sleep. He rides around on his demonic black horned horse named Dreamstalker.

Derrickson recently told IGN, "I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension. That's early - that's like the first Strange tale. I think that's in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that."

He appears as an extremely pale man with wild green hair, a green bodysuit, and a ragged cape. In one the comics he started tormenting Dr. Strange when the latter forgot to recite a spell before going to sleep.

On why he was not already introduced alongside Strange in 2016, Derrickson added, "We decided not to do that because that's a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce, and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension. I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that's a super cool concept."

This sequel hasn't been officially announced yet, but Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Dr. Strange in MCU's 2018 installment Avengers: Infinity War.

NME states that actress Tilda Swinton also wants to bag a Dr. Strange prequel movie, based on her character. Her identity is called the Ancient one, who is a Celtic mystic and Strange's mentor.

"I'm pretty confidently dropping hints in [Marvel boss] Kevin Feige's ear about a prequel, I'm constantly harassing him about that. I don't know if it'll get anywhere," stated Swinton.
