NFL News: Facts on Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott’s domestic violence case

Ezekiel Elliott's on-court dominance

Ezekiel Elliott was the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. In May 18, 2016, Elliot signed a rookie-contract that is reportedly a four-year $24.9 million dollars and includes a $16.3 signing bonus, per ESPN.

The Dallas Cowboys lost their first game of the season in the hands of NFC East division rival New York Giants. But they won six straight games. Ezekiel Elliott is a big part of that.

In his 7 games with the Cowboys as a starting running back, he tallied 799 rushing yards. The 799 rushing yards that he did was so impressive that he ranked first in that category in the NFL.

The alleged domestic violence case

On July 2016, Elliott's ex-girlfriend filed a domestic violence against the running back star. According to Dallas Morning News, the violence occurred in 5 separate occasions. The accuser completed the necessary documents to file the case including an interview in which details about each allegation were recorded, medical records, photographs of text messages and visible injuries.

Actions taken

The case was filed in the City Attorney's Office in Columbus, Ohio. But after reviewing the case, the City Attorney's Office, Prosecutor Division decided to decline the criminal charges for any of the alleged 5 incidence of violence due to conflicting and insufficient information about the case.

But although he is dismissed by the City Attorney's Office, it doesn't mean that he is through with that case. According to CBS Sports, Elliott is still being investigated by the NFL for the alleged domestic violence.

Possible sanctions

If the NFL found out that Elliott violated their domestic violence policy, the Cowboys' running back might be suspended for six-games. And given Elliott's importance to the Cowboys, suspending him for 6 games is crucial for the team. The NFL's leading rushing yard might affect the positioning of the Dallas Cowboys for the postseason.

But NFL was known for its inconsistencies in dealing with domestic violent cases.

In NFL history, only 2 players have been sanctioned for 6 games after proven guilty. They are Jermaine Cunningham and Rodney Austin. But those 2 are free agents that time and never played in a single NFL game again.

The latest player to be sanctioned by the NFL because of domestic violence is New York Jets' kicker Josh Brown. But NFL only suspended Brown for 1 game.

The current situation

The case is still ongoing right now and the NFL is still continuing their investigation regarding domestic violence case against Elliott. Will Ezekiel Elliott be suspended for 6 six games?
