NASA, ESA, China in race to reach Mars in 2020

The European Space Agency has revealed new details of the Exo Mars Mission 2020. Its 2016 mission is deemed a successful mission despite the crash on mars, caused by premature opening of its parachute.

In a statement, ESA explained that the 2020 mission would land on the surface of Mars, collects samples, look for organic materials and monitor the environment.

ESA would look to prioritize on context imaging of the landing site, climate monitoring for a long period, and investigation into the atmosphere of the planet.

Subsurface water distribution at the landing site, and the exchange of volatiles between the atmosphere and the surface will be investigated by sensors and instruments on the surface platform, which along with a rover are the two main components of the mission, said the ESA in a statement on its website.

The collection of samples will reportedly be carried out by a rover which would drill holes into the Martian surface to detect organic material and the environment inspection will be executed by a surface platform.

The statement goes on to say that the space agency has approved the selection of six European elements, which include two European led instruments and four Russian sensor packages.

The two European instruments are the Lander Radioscience experiment (LaRa) and the Habitability, Brine Irradiation and Temperature package (HABIT).

HABIT will ascertain that water vapor content in the atmosphere, variations in ground and air temperatures, and the amount of ultra violet radiation in the environment.

LaRa will show nuances of the internal structure of Mars and will aim for perfect measurements of how the planet rotates using two way Doppler frequency shifts between the platform and earth, added the ESA in their detailed statement.

Inverse said that 2020 will be a mad Mars party with the ESA's ExoMars, NASA's Mars 2020 and China.
