Google Daydream View vs Samsung Gear VR: Which one will you buy?

With Google Daydream View launching on November 10, Samsung Gear might face a tough competition.

Let's go through what they are offering.

Build and Design

According to Newsatlas, Daydream is challenging Gear VR's matte plastic frame with its fabric body, fulfilling Google's "inspired by what you wear" tag.

Digital Trends' Julian Chokkattu commented, "The plastic frame feels a little cheap, but I immediately forgot about it once I started touching the soft fabric it's made of. You can bend it a little, which is going to be handy when traveling."

Weight

The Gear VR weighs 318 gm when compared to Daydreams 220 gm. Both the measurements are without phone.

Display resolution and Type

Both of them sports AMOLED display. The resolution depends on the mobile device one is using. Gear VR is compatible to those Galaxy phones which have 1440*1280 per eye resolution and Daydream is compatible to both 1440*1280 and 1080* 960 per eye resolutions.

Compatibility

The Verge tells that eight hardware partners will make Daydream-ready phones in near future. These are Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, Asus and Alcatel. But Androidcentral states that as of now Daydream will only work on Google Pixel and Google Pixel.

One the other hand the Gear VR is designed to work with selected Samsung's flagship smartphones, such as Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6, and S6 edge.

None of the devices work on Iphones.

Field of view

Gear VR has field of view of 101° whereas Daydream hasn't officially revealed its field of view yet.

Motion Controls

According to mobipicker, Daydream View has nine motion sensors, a directional pad, volume buttons, a home button, and one extra button that can be reconfigured by developers.

The Gear VR's controls are built into the headset. You have a focus wheel on top, a trackpad on the right side of the headset, a back button and volume buttons.

It is to be noted that none of them features positional tracking, as compared to PC based VR devices. Thus, when the user moves their body from neck down the VR world also moves along them.

Gamepad support

Google rep has stated to newsatlas that Daydream games won't support full gamepads but a remote control as the primary input of Daydream view. Meanwhile, Gear VR supports a Bluetooth gamepad, which can be bought separately.

Wireless and Ports

Both of them are completely wireless. Daydream View features a USB-C port, which is slowly pushing Android's old microUSB connectors out of the picture. The latest Gear VR sports both USB-C port and miscroUSB connectors.

Focus adjustment and Glasses support

As per newsatlas, one can wear glasses while wearing either of the VR devices, but Gear VR is equipped with a focus button which can be tweaked to match the focus with your vision.

Colour and Price

Samsung Gear VR comes in only one colour as of now i.e Blue Black. Meanwhile Google Daydream is being launched with Slate colour, and two other colours- Snow and Crimson- will be added later in the option.

Cheaper than Gear VR, Daydream comes at $79 whereas the former is priced at $99.
