The Washington Redskins will introduce Jay Gruden on Thursday as the team's new head coach. The press conference begins at 4 p.m. EST. Watch the free live stream below.
Gruden became the Redskins' newest head coach on Thursday after three seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator. His stock rose this season after helping the Cincinnati Bengals to their third straight playoff appearance; he also garnered praise for his development of Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.
The Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions were also interested in the 46-year-old coach, who replaces Mike Shanahan in D.C.
One of his primary tasks in Washington will be to further the development of franchise quarterback Robert Griffin III. The 2012 Rookie of the Year struggled this season after undergoing ACL surgery last January.
In addition to fine-tuning the mechanics of Griffin, Gruden may be tasked with deflating the signal caller's ego - multiple reports, albeit anonymous, paint Griffin as a "diva" whose success has gone to his head. Gruden may also have to redefine Griffin's reported close relationship with owner Dan Snyder.
As Shanahan's successor, Gruden does enter a better situation. The NFL's cap penalties against Washington are over, giving the new coach more financial flexibility in free agency to fill a porous defense and a questionable offensive line.
There's expected to be a number of holdovers from the Shanahan coaching regime, which should make Gruden's transition easier. ESPN indicates Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris may be promoted to defensive coordinator, and Redskins tight end coach Sean McVay may be promoted to offensive coordinator - Gruden worked as an offensive assistant with both coaches in Tampa Bay.
He also has a working relationship with Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, who was the Buccaneers' general manager during Gruden's stint with the team.
Gruden is the younger brother of former Buccaneers coach and current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.
