Oklahoma City (27-8) continue to vie for the top spot in the Western Conference. The Thunder trail the San Antonio Spurs (28-8) by a half game and are nearly neck-and-neck with the Portland Trail Blazers (27-9) and Los Angeles Clippers (25-13).
A large part of the Thunder's success is due to their All-Star forward and the NBA's top scorer, Kevin Durant. He leads the league with 29.5 points per game while recording 8.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.
Still, Oklahoma City has struggled recently and dropped three of their last five games.
The absences of Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook haven't made things easier, either. Ibaka, who missed Tuesday because of the flu, is expected back in the lineup for Thursday, but Westbrook, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Dec. 27, isn't expected back until after February's All-Star break.
"(I want to see) toughness and even more toughness and some fight," Durant told the team website after losing to Utah on Tuesday, via ESPN. "We just have to stay together. We lost a basketball game on the road. It's not the end of the world. ... We just have to regroup and be better next game."
Denver (17-17), meanwhile, continues to fight to stay in contention for a Western Conference playoff seed. The Nuggets trail the Dallas Mavericks (20-16) and the Phoenix Suns (21-13) for the last two playoff spots, but have put together three straight wins to rise in the standings.
Denver had lost eight straight games prior to the start of their winning streak. Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried credits coach Brian Shaw for the team's recent turnaround.
"Coach let us hoop. He let us go out and play," said Faried. "He figured out that this altitude is a killer for teams and the personnel that we have is people who will get out and run, play great defense and it's fun when we do that instead of just calling plays all the time."
