Actor Gerard Butler is apparently in the final stages of negotiations to star in the upcoming remake to the 1990s classic surf and extreme sports film Point Break.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the movie is hoping to start shooting this summer. Ericson Core, the cinematographer behind 2001's The Fast & the Furious and Daredevil will direct the remake of the Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze thriller.
Kurt Wimmer wrote the screenplay for the new film, which is set in the international world of extreme sports as opposed to Southern California's surf scene. This time around, the plot of an FBI agent infiltrating a crime ring as well as the names of the principal characters will remain the same, but other aspects will be getting a major overhaul.
Butler will be taking the role of Patrick Swayze's original character Bodhi, an expert extreme-sports athlete who can only find his bliss while chasing extreme conquests through a series of athletic feats such as skydiving and surfing 100-foot waves. Like in the original film, he saves Johnny Utah, the undercover FBI agent, and brings him into the fold of an international crime ring. So far the role of Johnny Utah, Reeves' character, has not been cast.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Point Break will likely solidify Butler's schedule for 2014. He will shoot Linogate's fantasy film Gods of Egypt, which starts shooting in March. He will then move on to Point Break. He will close out his year with the filming of London is Falling the sequel to the surprising action hit Olympus Has Fallen.
Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing the film along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Wimmer.
