Seventeen-year-old Aitezaz Hassan was recommended to receive a Sitara-e-Shujaat, or Star of Bravery award, for tackling a suicide bomber trying to get into his school leading to his death, Reuters reported.
The Pakistan Prime Minister announced on Friday Hassan deserves to be remembered for his heroic action that saved the lives of his peers, according to Reuters.
"Shaheed (martyr) Aitezaz's brave act saved the lives of hundreds of students and established a sterling example of gallantry and patriotism," the statement from the prime minister said, according to Reuters.
On Monday, a suicide bomber dressed with the schools uniform was approaching the school when student realized he was wearing an explosives vest and began yelling to try and stop him, Reuters reported. Hassan then tackled the bomber detonating the explosives, killing him and the attacker.
"Though I lost my sweet son I have no regret for what he has done. He has done a heroic job and I am proud of his bravery," Aitezaz's father, Mujahid Ali, told Reuters.
Newspapers jumped on the schoolboys heroic action to call out the government for the inaction, Reuters reported.
"For the sake of Aitezaz and all the countless children that have been taken before their time, somebody from the government needs to take a page out of Aitezaz's book and resist terrorists until they can no longer harm Pakistan," the Nation newspaper said, according to Reuters.
The attack on the school was claimed by a Sunni Muslim group called Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, who believe Shi'ite Muslims are heretics and should be killed, Reuters reported. The area where the school is located consists of mostly Shi'ite Muslims.
