‘Boardwalk Empire’ Ending After Season 5, ‘Girls’ Renewed for Season 4

"Boardwalk Empire" is coming to an end. HBO announced on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Television Critics Assn. press tour that the show will end after Season 5, which begins in the fall. HBO promised fans at the press tour that it will be an "exciting ending."

"It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said at the event, Variety reports. "Terry Winter has created one for the ages."

"We're thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of 'Boardwalk Empire,'" Winter added. "After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we've decided to wrap up the series a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion."

At the event HBO also announced that "Girls" had been picked up for a fourth season. The third season kicks off Jan. 12 at 9 p.m. with back-to-back episodes. Lena Dunham, the show creator and one of the main characters, was forced to defend the show and explain why she doesn't see anything wrong with the nudity on the show.

"I don't get the purpose of the nudity on this show - by you particularly," a reporter asked the actress.

"It's a realistic expression of what it's like to be alive," Dunham replied, Entertainment Weekly reports. "If you're not into me, that's your problem and you're going to have to work that out with the professionals."

Judd Apatow, an executive producer on the show jumped in calling the question misogynistic, sexist and offensive.

"Do you have a girlfriend?" he asked the reporter, The Guardian reports. "Does she like you?

EW also said he told the reporter added "Lena is brave enough to do it. If Paul Rudd said to me, 'I'm willing to be completely naked in the movie,' I'd do it.... Most people are not comfortable, so we don't go there."
