A recent patent filing by Samsung indicates gesture controls might be included in its upcoming smartphone, Galaxy S5.
Samsung is expected to release its next flagship smartphone, Galaxy S5, by first quarter of 2014. A recent report published Thursday, suggests the device will include gesture controls on its next flagship product.
The report was first spotted by a Dutch website, Galaxy Club. The report shows a patent filed by Samsung includes gesture control through head movements that will take care of certain functionalities on Galaxy S5. The patent indicates the front camera on the device will be used to keep track of the head movements.
The patent also reveals the head movements will be possibly employed to turn the web pages and will require a confirmation before the function is executed. Command gestures could include head movement, a wink, snarl or even a nod.
Usage of front camera to track down the user movements has been seen earlier in one more Galaxy product, Galaxy S4. The patent report was published Thursday but it dates back to July 2013,which means soon after the release of Samsung Galaxy S4, and indicates the South Korean giant had enough time to further develop the tracking technology for its upcoming product.
Besides the gesture control, Samsung may also include an iris scanning feature on Galaxy S5, The company has yet not officially confirmed on the same, according to a recent CNN report. "Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology," said Lee Young Hee, executive vice president for Samsung's mobile business, "We are studying the possibility but can't really say whether we will have it or not on the S5."
There have been earlier reports of Samsung working on iris technology far superior to retina scanning or fingerprint recognition, although the new technology is costlier. However, a latest Android authority report claims that Samsung will include a proximity sensor on its latest scanning technology to adapt itself to all kind of iris.
According to Hee of Samsung, the upcoming Galaxy product will be 'significantly different' compared to its previous iterations that did not do as well in the market as expected.
