People depending on torrent download in their everyday life may not take a sigh of relief. It is rumored that popular torrent site Kickass Torrents may return back soon to compete with alternative torrent sites created to take its place.
Ever since Kickass Torrents shut down took place, several alternative torrent sites emerged as popular options for file sharing and torrent download. Some of these alternative torrent sites include The Pirate Bay (TPB), ExtraTorrent and 1337x.
However, now it seems that TPB may soon have to compete with the king of torrents-- KAT - again. A report published by Yibada indicates that KAT.cr lawyers are trying to convince court in the US that free movie streaming and torrent downloading is not actually a crime. The lawyers are also trying to get site operator Artem Vaulin freed.
TorrentFreak, on the other hand, also reports that Kickass torrents may return as KAT.cr. However, this may happen only after the end of 2017 and it is speculated that the site may get up and running again in February 2017.
Until then, Vaulin will be kept in custody since the Polish court has already rejected his plea to be freed. The US government has accused Vaulin of money laundering and sever copyright infringement. He is yet to face a jury trial in the US.
Meanwhile, Vaulin's lawyers are busy arguing that Kickass torrents is not a criminal enterprise, as interpreted and represented by the government in the US. The legal experts are making all efforts get the criminal indictment against Vaulin dismissed.
The lawyers continue to argue that torrenting and streaming are not crimes, therefore, Vaulin should not be regarded as a criminal. According to the lawyers, free video sharing is not illegal in the US and streaming is not even a felony.
In their plea to dismiss the case against Vaulin, the lawyers also state that the indictment is flawed as it violates a number of constitutional prohibitions. In such a scenario, it is best hopes that Kickass torrents can make a comeback any time soon.
