One man died and one woman disappeared after jumping into the frigid Chicago River early Monday morning, the New York Daily News reported.
According to authorities, the incident occurred when the man's cell phone fell into the water. He jumped in and tried to save it, prompting the woman and a second man to jump in after him.
After first responders arrived at the scene, they were able to pull both men from the water within minutes but could not locate the 21-year-old woman.
The 26-year-old man who originally jumped in the river was later pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The second man, 23, was listed in stable condition at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital.
Before ending their search, rescue workers -- assisted by dozens of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics -- continued to look for the woman but came up with nothing. She is presumed dead by authorities.
"We continued efforts for over an hour rotating divers, searched for the final victim were unsuccessful," Fire Chief Linda Parsons told the Chicago Tribune. "Now the scene is turned over to Chicago police for recovery. Our operation is terminated at this point."
The relationship between the three victims is unknown and none of their names have been released.
