Lion (7,2 stars out of 10 on IMDB)
This heartwarming drama is the perfect to watch during Thanksgiving break since it deserves a full heart and open mind. 5-year-old boy Saroo (Sunny Pawar) accidentally becomes separated from his parents on a train, somewhere in India.
He ends up in an orphanage and, eventually, becomes adopted by one loving couple (Nicole Kidman, David Wenham) and moves all the way in Tasmania. However, he never forgot his former life.
20 years later, as the now college grad (Dev Patel), he uses Google Earth in the slim hopes of tracking down his real family. After intensive staring to his computer screen, he finally manages to find his parents and girlfriend (Rooney Mara). As the film is based on true story, you probably know how will it end. (In theaters from Friday, November 25).
Moana (8,4 stars out of 10 on IMDB)
Family entertainment during holidays is very important. What could be better than a fantastically sappy Disney musical? Moana (voiced by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) is the daughter of a Polynesian island chief.
She didn't want to settle down with a dark-haired hunk so she wanted to try her luck beyond the reef of her home. Moana gets her chance to leave when signup to volunteer to sail the ocean. During that journey, she finds a legendary demigod named Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and save her land from ruin.
This story surely doesn't sound original but it makes up for in breathtaking animation and charming humor. Also, the extraordinary melodies are creatively poured into the narrative. If you liked Frozen, you will love Moana because "How Far I'll Go" is the new "Let It Go"! (In theaters from Wednesday, November 23)
Manchester by the Sea (8,6 stars out of 10 on IMDB)
Lee (Casey Affleck) has found his career-defining role as a Boston janitor who has disconnected himself from the world around him. After his brother (Kyle Chandler) dies and names him the legal guardian of his teen son, he needs to take the responsibility.
Despite his obvious bond with his hockey-playing nephew, he finds it hard reticent to uproot back to his hometown of Manchester because of his ex-wife (Michelle Williams).
This is an emotionally overwhelming story, but isn't that a characteristic of a great movie? (Now in theaters)
