No Pants Subway Ride 2014 (SLIDESHOW): Over 4,000 New Yorkers Ditch Pants, Ride Trains in Underwear

Over the weekend, thousands of people all over the world braved the cold weather and ditched their pants for the 13th annual "No Pants Subway Ride." The event was founded by Impprov Everywhere and began as a prank in New York City back in 2002.

According to their site a group of seven guys wanted to know how New Yorkers would react if they saw people hop on the subways in coats, scarves, gloves but no pants in the middle of winter. The prank quickly went viral and grew to an international event.

"The idea was simple: What would happen if in the middle of January a guy got on a subway car in his underwear but was also wearing a winter coat, scarf, gloves, hat... would it be even more insane if at the second time a new person got on in their underwear," a member of the group says in a YouTube video.

Every year in January, the group dedicates one day to "No Pants Subway Ride." Anyone can participate but there is one rule that must be followed: you have to board the subway cars in your underwear.

"Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants," the group writes on their site. "The participants do not behave as if they know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants."

This year over 4,000 New Yorkers participated in the event alone. Thousands of others joined in on the fun in 56 cities in 25 countries. Subway riders in places like Chicago, Germany, Berlin, Mexico City and Hong Kong all rode the trains in their underwear.
