No. 8 Iowa State (14-1) had their 14-game winning streak ended on Saturday when they were handed an 87-82 loss by Oklahoma. The Cyclones struggled on the glass and were out-rebounded by the Sooners. Despite suffering their first defeat of the season, Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg is confident his team can bounce back and use the loss as learning experience.
"The big thing I told our guys is that this needs to hurt," Hoiberg said, via ESPN. "We gave away a golden opportunity because we couldn't secure the rebounds."
Sophomore forward Georges Niang attributed the loss to poor ball movement and a lack of speed in transition.
"I just think we got off our rhythm," said Niang. "We didn't move the ball around and didn't play with good pace like we usually do. We're a fast team and we like to get up. I just think we didn't do that, and they capitalized on that."
No. 15 Kansas (11-4), meanwhile, bounced back from a surprising loss to San Diego State on Jan. 5 by stringing together two straight wins. The Jayhawks breezed by Kansas State on Saturday with an 86-60 win, thanks in part to the 22 points from guard Andrew Wiggins.
The star freshman is averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game while grabbing 5.4 rebounds every outing. On top of Wiggins's individual performance, Kansas appears to be improving as a whole.
"Playing a certain way with energy is contagious," said Jayhawks coach Bill Self. "I think everybody is just playing with more energy now consistently than we probably have at any point in time this year. It's definitely getting better."
