The Chicago Cubs has a fruitful 2016 season. After winning the World Series against the Cleveland Indians in seven thrilling games, many ask what would be the next step for them? And it seems that they are moving to acquire Kenley Jansen from the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason.
Jansen, who became a free agent this winter after playing for seven years with the Dodgers, has an average of 1.83 ERA, 47 saves, 104 strikeouts and 0.67 WHIP. His averages will be a big boost to the Cubs if ever they want to defend their title next year. Reports are saying that the Cubs will try to pitch and talk to Jansen on a possible transfer to them.
According to CitizenOracle, winning the title doesn't mean that the Chicago Cubs will not have an upgrade of their own as many teams are also moving to strengthen their rosters. And since Jansen is a high caliber free agent in the trade market, it makes sense to chase him and try to acquire him from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
However, one roadblock seems to be preventing this from happening and that is Jansen's salary. Reports are saying that Jansen is seeking a long-term, lucrative contract which the Cubs might not be able to provide as they are looking for a low-priced closer. Some suggest that they can look for Mark Melancon as a cheaper alternative but some insist on considering Jansen as the best option.
Some also suggest that the Cubs may let go of Travis Wood, Justin Grimm, Trevor Cahill, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondo in order to free some salary space and absorb Jansen's salary. It could be a perfect opportunity also for the Cubs to prepare if ever Aroldis Chapman decides to leave the team.
According to ChattSportsNet, rumors are spreading that Chapman could be leaving the Cubs and try to reunite with his former team, the New York Yankees. Chapman, who've been a big help to the Cubs winning the trophy, is said to be open on returning to the Bronx that he praises on recent interviews.
If ever, Jansen would be a perfect replacement for Chapman as both players are right-hand pitchers. Their stats are also not far from each other making it for the Cubs to easily adjust and production will not be a problem.
