A German teen was molested on a passenger train bound for Chennai, a city in southern India. Railway police nabbed a 25-year-old in connection with the crime, Tuesday.
The 18-year-old girl complained to police that she was abused sexually on January 11, between 12 am and 1 am in a moving train by her co-passenger in the train.
The complainant also stated that the man who hails from Bihar, a state in northern India, assaulted her while she was asleep and the teen did not seek help as she was too scared.
The man has been identified as N Chandan Kumar and has been charged of rape, reported The Times of India. According to the police, Kumar, a carpenter, was going back to Chennai after finishing a job in Mangalore, a city in the southern state of Karnataka.
"We picked up the Bihari youth within 24 hours of receiving the complaint. At present he is under our custody and we will conduct an identification parade before remanding him in judicial custody," Seema Aggarwal, inspector general of police, government railway police, Tamil Nadu, told the Hindustan Times.
Aggarwal said that since all passengers are required to provide their details and phone number, they arrested the man within a short period of time. "It is not the question of whether the rape was committed or not. The very moment there is a complaint, we have to arrest the person and conduct the identification parade," she said.
The TOI reported that the abused German teen worked as a school teacher at a primary school in Udipi, a city in the southern state of Karnataka. She reported the matter to the German consulate in Chennai before filing a police complaint.
The police said that during the interrogation Kumar confessed to his crime and is in judicial custody.
