Wendy Davis Raises More Funds Than Opponent Greg Abbott In Texas Governor Race

Wendy Davis revealed how much money her campaign has raised to date on Tuesday night, demonstrating higher fundraising numbers than Republican opponent Greg Abbott, MSNBC reported.

Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor of Texas, collected $12.2 million from 70,000 individual donors within the last six months of 2013.

Spokeswoman Rebecca Acuna told POLITICO that the numbers put Davis "way past the credibility threshold."

"They are huge, huge numbers showing there is so much support and momentum for her race," Acuna added.

Davis' opponent, Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, raised $11.5 million during the same time period, which his campaign manager emphasized primarly came from in-state donors.

"This is a campaign by Texans, for Texans, and Greg Abbott is humbled and excited by the widespread support from across the state," campaign manager Wayne Hamilton said in a statement.

However, Acuna also said a majority of the small donations made to Davis were in-state too.

Davis, current state Senator, quickly rose to fame last summer after performing a 12-hour filibuster against abortion restrictions. Later in October, she announced she would run for governor.

"Texas is a place where we aim high and we take big risks," Davis said supporters at a rally outside of Fort Worth in the fall. "We're builders, and doers, leaders, and dreamers. We love Texas, not only for how good it is, but for how great we know it can be."

The governor's office is currently occupied by Gov. Rick Perry and the election is slated for November. The last Democrat to win governor of Texas was Ann Richards in 1990.
