The New York Knicks are a terrible team in the last three seasons. They didn't reach the NBA playoffs in the past 3 seasons with a combined 86-160 win-loss regular season record. They have a veteran player in Carmelo Anthony and a rising star in Kristaps Porzingis. But they also have new acquisition in Derrick Rose.
This season, it looks like the Knicks will finally reach the NBA postseason. With a 12-10 win-loss record, the Knicks are third in Atlantic Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference. They won four straight games before losing big to the Cleveland Cavaliers last Wednesday.
Veteran forward Carmelo Anthony and rising star Kristaps Porzingis has been carrying the Knicks to its early success. Carmelo Anthony is averaging 22.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 33.7 minutes. Kristaps Porzingis on the other hand, is averaging 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks on 46.1% field goal shooting.
But as good as the Knicks are right now, the question lies on new acquisition Derrick Rose. Rose is a former MVP himself but since undergoing a lot of injuries over the past few years, it looks like he will not get back to his MVP-form. He is averaging 16.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 31.9 minutes of playing time, as per ESPN.
He is playing decently with the Knicks. But for the Knicks to challenge the Cleveland Cavaliers in the East, they could find a better point guard and let go of Rose. According to The Cheat Sheet, if the Knicks choose to let go of Rose after this season, they could pursue Stephen Curry and offer him a max contract.
Compared to D-Rose, Curry is clearly a much better player. While having Rose as a starting point guard may be enough for the Knicks to reach the playoffs. But having Curry as their starting point guard will be enough to challenge the Cleveland Cavaliers in Eastern Conference supremacy.
The New York Knicks might attract Curry. Aside from the fact that New York is a world-class city, he has an opportunity to deliver an NBA Championship to a franchise that hasn't won one in over 40 years. He also has good supporting cast in Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. With Curry, Anthony and Porzingis, they could put up a good fight against the Big Three of the Cavs' James, Irving and Love.
Curry will surely play for the Golden State Warriors for the rest of the season. But who knows what might happen once he entered free agency. Will the Knicks let go of Rose and pursue Curry instead?
