12-Year-Old Shooter Arrested In Berrendo Middle School Shooting; Expected To Be Charged Soon

The 12-year-old boy who opened fire at students and faculty at Berrendo Middle School earlier this week was arrested on Wednesday and is expected to be charged soon, Reuters reported.

According to Roswell-based District Attorney Janetta Hicks, the unidentified boy will be charged on Wednesday or Thursday as a juvenile.

An 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were injured in the shooting on Tuesday. A faculty member was also injured, though he reportedly refused to receive medical attention when first responders arrived to the building.

Hicks added that because of his young age, he will not be tried as an adult in accordance with New Mexico law.

Immediately following the shooting, the boy was taken to an "appropriate children's facility" in Albuquerque, according to state police spokesman Lieutenant Emmanuel Gutierrez.

The district attorney and police are still going through evidence to determine what charges to bring against the boy.

A spokesman for the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, where both victims are being treated, said the male victim was in critical condition and the female victim's condition was satisfactory.

Tuesday's incident marked the second shooting at a U.S. middle school in the past three months. In October, another 12-year-old boy in Nevada killed a teacher and injured two students before taking his own life.

The shooting at Berrendo reportedly only lasted 10 seconds, thanks to John Masterson, a courageous teacher who conviced the boy to put his weapon down.

"(Masterson) stood there and allowed a gun to be pointed right at him," New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez said. "And to talk down that young boy to drop the gun so there would be no more young kids hurt."
