Oppo Announces Mid-Range Neo Smartphone For $215; Responds To 'Gloves Mode'

Oppo announced its newest addition to the advanced smartphone lineup with a 4.5-inch Neo smartphone that responds to touches even when wearing gloves.

Oppo, the Chinese smartphone maker, surprised consumers in September with its flagship N1 smartphone and later added a CyanodenMod edition during the Christmas holidays. The Chinese phone company is not letting down its standards on adding innovative features in the latest addition to its smartphone family. The all-new Oppo Neo was officially announced by the phone company, but only in Indonesia, soon after a leaked image surfaced online, Wednesday.

The 4.5-inch Oppo Neo packs some of the most incredible features and mid-range specs yet does not dig deep into consumers' pockets. It packs an IPS LCD screen with 854 x 480-screen resolution and 217 ppi. The phone arrives in two variants, one which supports single SIM and another with dual-SIM. Like other variants, Oppo Neo runs the company's proprietary ColorOS interface built on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Under the hood, the Neo smartphone is powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core processor but the RAM size has not been disclosed. The camera is aided by 5-megapixels in the rear to record up to 720p videos and a 2-megapixel shooter in the front that justifies perfect selfies. The handset chassis measures 132 x 65.8 x 9.2mm, but the sleek design packs a powerful 1,900 mAh battery.

The Neo packs some notable features that are rarely seen in any other camera phone. It features "Gloves Mode" and like the name suggests, users can use the phone's LCD screen even while wearing gloves. Another notable feature that adds to Neo's unique list is the "Quick Reach," which is Oppo's gesture-based function to trigger other features on the smartphone.

Oppo has listed the device for Rp 2,599,000 or around $215 in the Indonesian market. The availability of Oppo Neo in other global markets is currently unknown.
