New York Jets coach Rex Ryan reportedly agreed to a multi-year contract extension. While Ryan will remain with the Jets, cornerback Antonio Cromartie is convinced he will be cut in the offseason. Former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, meanwhile, called the trade for Tim Tebow his biggest mistake.
Ryan, who's been on the hot seat through the entire season, apparently did enough to convince owner Woody Johnson to give him another chance to turn things around at Florham Park.
"Jets and head coach Rex Ryan have reached agreement on a multi-year extension, according to team and league sources," ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted on Thursday. "Rex Ryan had 1 year left on deal. His agreed-to extension is for multi years. That ties Ryan to Jets for at least 3 more years, maybe more."
The extension's monetary worth is based heavily on incentives related to postseason success, according to ESPN.
Ryan's Jets finished the 2013 season with an 8-8 record, an improvement from last year's 6-10 record. While Ryan no longer has questions about job security, the same cannot be said for Cromartie.
Cromartie said he wants to remain with the Jets, but the $5 million roster bonus he is due in March could make him expendable. He spoke on Wednesday with Pro Football Talk and confirmed he believes he'll be released in the offseason.
"I think I am because my cap number is very high and I had one of the worst seasons of my career this past year," Cromartie told Pro Football Talk.
Tannenbaum, now a full season removed from the Jets' front office, reflected on what ultimately cost him his job.
"Obviously we made a couple mistakes - trading for Tim Tebow most notably," Tannenbaum said during a CBS Sports radio interview on Wednesday. "But I would say beyond that, but we (could have done a better job with the bottom of our roster), especially toward the end."
