Social Media Slams Vanity Fair Magazine For Lightening Lupita Nyong'o's Skin

Breakout Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong'o is leaving a blazing trail in Hollywood, receiving a Golden Globe nomination and an Oscars nomination for her role in the movie "12 Years A Slave."

Nyong'o has snagged several magazine covers, a normal result for any hot, new actress. But what may not be so normal is the criticism her pictures in Vanity Fair magazine are receiving because of the seemingly altered color of her skin, the Huffington Post reported.

Vanity Fair is being accused of lightening Nyong'o's skin in its February issue. The magazine tweeted out a picture of the actress on Wednesday.

"The stunning @Lupita_Nyongo photographed for our February #Vanities section," the tweet said.

Several people were quick to point out that Nyong'o's dark complexion looked lighter in the photograph.

"@VanityFair: The stunning @Lupita_Nyongo did you lighten her skin?" Renee Kelly PR Girl tweeted Wednesday.

"No thanks," Cacy Ramon Forgenie tweeted, "you've ruined her image with the white washing. Flash, photoshop whatever. Leave it to yall. @Vanity Fair @ReignOfApril #Vanity."

Some even tweeted out pictures of Nyong'o, who was also featured in Miu Miu's Spring 2014 campaign, with a regular picture of the actress next to the Vanity Fair image.

Can we discuss @VanityFair's pic of Lupita, on the right? Anyone see the difference?" @ReignOfApril tweeted.

What do you think of Nyong'o's photo?
