The nominations for the 2014 Oscars were announced on Thursday, Jan. 16. There are many great movies and Hollywood stars in the running for an Academy Award but there has been some outrage about what's been left off the list.
A lot of people were surprised that "Blackfish," a documentary about a male orca whale that killed a Sea World trainer in 2010, didn't receive any nominations. The film explored everything from how the whales are captured and treated to several deaths as a result.
Out of all the documentaries that did receive a nomination, "Blackfish" had the most social media impact and attention. Many people were also surprised that actor Tom Hanls didn't receive a Best Actor nom for "Captain Phillips."
The film, which focuses on the relationship between Captain Richard Phillips and a Somali pirate who takes him hostage, did receive nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Somali-American actor Barkhad Abdi (who played the lead pirate who took Phillips hostage) received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
"Fruitvale Station" generated a lot of buzz after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie is about 22-year-old Oscar Grant a Bay Area resident and tells the tragic story of Dec. 31, 2008 leading up to his death when he was shot by a BART police officer.
The film, which was released Jan. 19, 2013, didn't receive any nominations. A lot of people also felt Oprah Winfrey was snubbed by the Academy Awards for her role as Gloria Gaines in Lee Daniels' "The Butler."
Winfrey received noms from the SAG Awards, the BAFTAs and the Critic's Choice Awards but not the Oscars.
"Inside Llewyn Davis," which tells the story of a young folk singer in Greenwich Village, received nominations for sound mixing and cinematography but none for the bigger categories.
The movies that did get the most noms included "Gravity," "American Hustle," and "12 Years a Slave." You can see the full list of nominations here.
