All the fans of "Sherlock" who were mourning the non-confirmation of Season 5 have some great news. No, "Sherlock" Season 5 has not been confirmed but Benedict Cumberbatch, who played the titular role in the popular BBC series, would be returning in a similar role for the Showtime series "Melrose."
Benedict Cumberbatch will star in Showtime's limited series "Melrose," Bustle claimed. He will be playing the titular character Patrick Melrose and the series is based on the novels of Edward St. Aubyn. What is interesting is that the character Melrose is very similar to Sherlock Holmes and they seem to share strong familiarity.
This is because Benedict Cumberbatch's role as Patrick Melrose requires him to play an aristocratic and funny playboy who takes recourse to substance abuse to wipe away painful childhood memories of his abusive father. All those who know Sherlock Holmes would find it quite similar and fans would definitely agree that no one else is more qualified to play the role than Cumberbatch.
So, even if "Sherlock" Season 5 does not get a nod, fans can take heart from the fact that they would be seeing a similar version of the detective in "Melrose." However, it would take some time before the show goes on air. The shooting is said to begin after August 2017 and the Showtime team is doing its best to bring in the best team.
They have roped in famous writer David Nicholls to pen the script. For those who do not know, he has scripted the emotional drama "One Day" and "Starter for 10." Not only this, "Melrose" will also see Benedict Cumberbatch donning spectacular makeup and prosthetics. This is because his role is said to age. Lastly, the series would be shot at different locations such as New York, France, and the U.K.
It is worth mentioning here that Benedict Cumberbatch became a popular name with "Sherlock" his fame grew with the subsequent movie "Dr. Stranger."
