A couple is trying to sell a 113-year-old Victorian house that has been creeping them out for years by mysteriously banging doors, odd noises from the basement, and giving a constant feeling that someone is standing behind them, the Associated Press reported.
So the house was listed as "slightly haunted" by homeowners Gregory and Sandi Leeson when it was put up for sale in northeastern Pennsylvania last month.
But instead of getting legitimate buyers, the couple started getting calls from ghost hinters and visits to an open house from curiosity seekers. According to the AP, "a former resident came out of the woodwork to tell the couple that when he was a kid, he found a human skull in the basement - the same basement whose door Sandi once barricaded because she swore she could hear the clicking of a cigarette lighter emanating from the subterranean depths."
Gregory is skeptical of the whole situation and is now questioning whether he should have put out the slightly tongue-in-cheek advertisement about the home's spooky charms, the AP reported.
"Slightly haunted. Nothing serious, though," the listing on Zillow's real-estate site said.
It goes on to describe 3:13 a.m. screams and "the occasional ghastly visage" in the bathroom mirror. On the market for $144,000, the Leesons are hoping to find an actual buyer for the four-bedroom home after getting so much attention from local and national media, the AP reported.
"I tried to word it with a little bit of a sense of humor," said Greg, a 35-year-old who works in information technology, but "I don't think it has helped with marketing. We're not really getting very many interested buyers. We're getting a lot of nonsense people."
If the spring doesn't garner any interest and better offers, then they might consider renting the house by the night for people looking to get some spooky thrills, Leesons said.
While Greg concedes that the home has a "creepy vibe," he doesn't believe in ghosts. But his wife believes otherwise.
"I definitely think there's a spirit or a ghost in the house, just from my personal experiences," she said.
