Reports claimed that reconstruction in Nepal has been very slow after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake last 2015. With this problem, the women there break tradition and offer help to speed up the reconstruction which men usually do.
It was claimed by several reports that women in Nepal do all the reconstruction works from digging foundations to carrying bricks and sand. One of these women is Sanumaya Kumal who helped reconstruct houses hit by an earthquake along with some other women in Kathmandu.
It was mentioned on BBC that women as per tradition are limited to household works but due to lack of men who should be doing the work as Nepal is currently facing a lack of manpower in this needed time. As many men are flocking to other countries to work, Sanumaya shared that she is happy with her job. Having worked on a farm before, she said that she can perform any work that a male mason can also execute.
Some of the tasks which Sanumaya along with other women performs include plastering, roof-fitting, and building walls. The lack of manpower is caused by nearly 1,500 young Nepalese who travel to the Middle East for overseas jobs. With this, Nepal government mentioned that this resulted in the shortage of labor and could even delay the reconstruction works in health centers and schools.
However, the government of Nepal needs not to implement another policy to solve this since women, most especially in places hit by the earthquake last April 25, 2015, are the ones taking up the reconstruction works. Although a budget has been allotted for the reconstruction, the rpgre3ss for this has been very slow.
As reported by CNN, the earthquake killed 9,000 people and resulted in million worth of damages in buildings and houses. Because of this, some organizations outside Nepal have been offering the women some help in order for them to boost the skills they need in the reconstruction work.
Not only that, since these women, including Sanumaya, are all happy and contented that they are earning a decent living. Apart from this, they are also aware that they are participating in a crucial work.
