Peripheral artery disease or PAD has a direct connection with regular intake of fruits and vegetables. A study conducted by New York University School of Medicine has found that consuming fruits and veggies on a daily basis has a significant impact on PAD as it cuts down the risk of the disease.
Doctors have long advised people to include fruits and vegetables in their daily diet and now a study has found out an important link between daily consumption of fruits/veggies and peripheral artery disease (PAD). According to Sci-News, the study conducted by researchers at New York School of Medicine found that if one consumes fruits/veggies regularly, the chances of getting affected by PAD get reduced to a significant degree.
The author leading the study said that their findings offer more evidence about the importance of including fruits and veggies in one's daily diet. Notably, it has been an established medical fact that regular intake of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of coronary heart disease but with this study, the researchers have given people, even more, reasons to eat healthy.
As for the study, it is the result of research done on the data gathered from 3.7 million men and women, claimed Science Daily. Of the total population, 64% were women and the average age of the participants was 64 years. After the study, it was found that those who ate three servings of fruits and veggies or more than that had 18% lesser chances of PAD than those who did not.
However, when the participants were grouped on the basis of their smoking habits, the connection was found only among participants who had quit smoking or were currently smoking. Also, 6.3% of the participants were found to have PAD and only a small percentage, 29.2 to be exact, reported eating fruits and vegetables regularly.
It is worth mentioning here that PAD is a disease that derails the flow of blood to the muscles of the legs and thus, it becomes painful for the affected person to stand or walks.
