A 14-year-old girl is facing a murder charge after allegedly stabbing an 11-year-old girl to death on Tuesday in Mundelein, Ill., ABC 7 reported.
The unidentified girl is scheduled to appear at a hearing at the Depke Juvenile Center in Vernon Hills on Wednesday, according to Chief George Filenko of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
During a press conference, Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz called the situation difficult for the community to take in and asked for prayers.
Authorities said several stab wounds were evident when they discovered the victim, though they planned to wait to hear back from an autopsy report to discuss details further.
A report in the Chicago Tribune claims the victim suffered 40 stab wounds, including three slashes across the face. Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd also found defensive wounds on both of her hands in addition to bruises on her chest.
A first-degree murder charge will be filed in juvenile court on Wednesday afternoon.
Mundelein police said the 911 call was made by the suspect around 8:26 a.m., who also let officers into the door when they arrived. Despite believing the incident to be isolated, nearby schools were placed on lockdown for 15 minutes.
Police also said the parents were notified on Tuesday. According to neighbors, the girls were possibly related and may have been sisters.
Due to the age of the suspect and victim, authorities have not released either of their names. Officials said the murder was "an extremely tragic event that shook even the most seasoned investigator."
