No. 8 Wawrinka took No. 2 Novak Djokovic to five sets before pulling away with the win. Wawrinka dethroned the three-time reigning Aussie Open champion and advanced to the semifinals for the first time in Melbourne.
More importantly, Wawrinka finally defeated the man who had won 14 straight matches against him, including matches taken to five sets in last year's Australian and US Opens.
"Last year it was really tough but it's a new year and I came back," Wawrinka said, via ESPN. "I did not start well, I was not feeling great on the court. I tried everything. He's an amazing champion and he never gives up."
Berdych, ranked No. 7 in the World, earned a spot in the semifinals after defeating David Ferrer in four sets on Monday.
"It was physically very tough and after losing the third set I was not playing my best," said Berdych. "I was very up and down. I just had to focus for every single point. This is my first win in the Rod Laver Arena so I'm very happy."
Thursday will be Berdych's first-ever appearance in a semifinal at the Australian Open.
Wawrinka has won eight of the 13 matches he's played against Berdych, including six of the last seven. They last met at the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals in London, where Wawrinka won in three sets.
