Facebook has its share of dedicated users. Among them is Edythe Krichmaier who celebrated her 106th birthday, January 22!
Kirchmaier, who was born in 1908, joined the widely used social networking website last year and since then she has held the title of being the oldest user of Facebook. Her friends at Direct Relief, a medical aid charity, introduced her to this social medium.
"My goal was to get my favorite charity, Direct Relief, better known," Kirchmaier told ABCNews.com. While setting up her account, she faced problems entering her birth year. The engineers had to spend over three weeks to solve the technical glitch.
Kirchmaier is also the oldest licensed driver in California and the oldest living graduate of the University of Chicago.
The centenarian also boasts a long list of friends on Facebook. She has over 45,000 friends on her list. She extensively uses the platform to encourage others to volunteer for Direct Relief, a California NGO that focuses on getting critically needed medicines and supplies to local healthcare providers across the world.
A fan page for Kirchmaier on the charity aid website was set up last year and now has over 105,000 'likes.' '"I never thought we would hit 105,000 likes, but we did. I have been volunteering here for 40 years and it feeds my soul," she said.
Despite being a devoted Facebook user, Kirchmaier makes sure that she sends personally written thank you notes to the charity donors.
Kirchmaier received a computer as a present from her children at the age of 95. She jokingly says that the gift "turned me loose."
Keeping up to date with social networking websites is not limited to youngsters. Even the elderly have joined in the fun.
Kirchamaier also makes it clear that she will not be exploring any other social networking websites. "I'm sticking with Facebook for now."
In an interview with OWN TV, she said she met her husband, Joseph, in Chicago when she was 30 years old. "He worked at the same welfare office during the Depression. I was his supervisor. So, we spent time together every day, consulting. And we fell in love," she revealed.
Kirchamaier has witnessed the two World Wars and 19 different U.S. presidents. She said that now people mostly think about what they can get from life rather than what then can give.
