Fans of boxing-franchise "Rocky" will not have to settle for watching repeats of the action-packed flick. The Oscar-winning film of 1976 is set to open on Broadway.
Sylvester Stallone, the star and creator of the hit film "Rocky", will release the play February 2014, according to BBC News.
The film tells the story of a Philadelphia-tough boxer making his way to fighting on the world's largest stages.
Stallone and Ukrainian boxers, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, created the musical two years ago. The fellow boxers also helped to train the actors for their new roles.
Stallone released a trailer for the NYC launch. In the video, Stallone praises the team surrounding him.
"I'm so happy, it's amazing that the Klitschko's are here," Stallone said. "They are giving birth to something that is first on the planet. I'm proud of you guys, I'm proud of Hamburg."
The musical adaptation, opened in Hamburg, Germany to rave reviews, according to The Telegraph. "Rocky: Das Musical" made its debut in Hamburg last November.
Broadway-fanatics a bit uneasy of a boxing-turned-musical play, should feel at ease to know Broadway-veterans are involved. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who composed the score for "Ragtime", have written the songs for the well-known Rocky Balboa.
Ahrens' describes the play as "a wonderful romantic story." Thomas Meehan, the writer of "Hairspray", is also a major addition to the upcoming Broadway musical.
Bill Taylor, the managing director of Stage Entertainment USA, is ecstatic about the stage musical.
"This is not boxers doing a kick line. It's stunning movement representing some of the sparring and the fighting. It's very, very cleverly created," Taylor said.
The Broadway version will cost approximately $15 million according to Taylor. Germany's production costs weighed in around $20 million to make, as stated by Entertainment Wise.
"Rocky" joins a list of movies-turned-musicals. Shrek, Spider-Man, and The Color Purple have all graced the stages under Broadway lights.
