The sons of Hall of Famers Cris Carter and Joe Montana are taking a shot at playing in the NFL.
Carter's son, Duron, is likely to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, according to ESPN. The receiver went unselected in this year's draft and will try out next week at the Vikings' rookie camp.
Duron played his freshman year in 2009 with Ohio State and finished the season with 13 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown. He transferred to Coffeyville Community College in 2010 for academic reasons, then to Alabama in 2011 and finally to Florida Atlantic in 2012, although he never played for the school.
He hopes to follow in his father's footsteps. Cris Carter, now an ESPN NFL analyst, played 12 seasons with Minnesota and holds franchise records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions.
Joe Montana's son, Nate, also hopes to follow in his father's footsteps with the San Francisco 49ers. The San Francisco Gate reports the 49ers have invited the undrafted quarterback to try out in May at their rookie minicamp. Nate, 23, is considered a "long shot" to make the roster.
He played last season at West Virginia Wesleyan and threw for 2,480 yards and 19 touchdowns. Before playing last season at the Division II school, Montana was a reserve at Pasadena City College, Notre Dame and the University of Montana.
Montana has said he will explore Arena football or the Canadian Football League if he doesn't sign with the NFL.
Joe Montana, his father, won three Super Bowls with the 49ers and tossed 273 career touchdowns while throwing for 40,551 yards.
"The expectactions sometimes may be unrealistic," Nate said of having the Montana surname. "But then also it may open a door, so you can't complain about it."
Carter and Montana's tryouts are courtesies to their fathers, but at the very least it is an opportunity to compete for a roster spot and play in the NFL.
