NFL Coaching Rumors: Browns Interviewing Kyle Shanahan For OC, Broncos OC Adam Gase Explains Why He Didn’t Want Cleveland Job

Former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan reportedly will interview for a job on Wednesday with the Cleveland Browns. Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, meanwhile, explained why he chose not to pursue the Browns' head coaching job.

Shanahan is scheduled to interview with the Browns on Wednesday for the offensive coordinator job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Cleveland is also set to interview Oakland Raiders quarterback coach John Defilippo on Thursday for the same job.

Shanahan, 34, was also a candidate for the coordinator job with the Baltimore Ravens; Baltimore ultimately hired former Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak.

Shanahan, the son of Super Bowl winning coach Mike Shanahan, spent two years as the Houston Texans offensive coordinator before following his father to Washington, where he held the same position for the last four seasons.

Cleveland hired Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Mike Pettine in January, although the franchise was widely reported as wanting to hire Gase. The 35-year-old offensive coordinator withdrew his name from consideration on Jan.21, and on Tuesday he offered an explanation as to why.

"It just wasn't the right time, as far as the timing with us coming here (to the Super Bowl) and the focus I wanted on this game," Gase said during NFL Media Day, via Pro Football Talk. "... I had made up my mind what I wanted to do, and that's what I did."

The perceived instability in the Browns front office was considered a deterrent for head coaching candidates. Gase's agent, Bob LaMonte, expressed concern over whether Gase would be able to grow into the job, and he ultimately though it better for Gase to get a second year under his belt as an offensive coordinator.

"The feeling in league circles is that Bob LaMonte, the agent for Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, might want to wait a year before placing his 35-year-old client in a head coaching position," Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote on Jan. 16. "...LaMonte is fairly certain that Gase will have multiple head coaching offers next season, with several attractive options.

"He'll also have some leverage if Gase receives multiple offers."
