The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) announced their endorsement of Wendy Davis for governor of Texas on Wednesday, Culture Map Dallas reported.
On their website, the HRC applauded Davis' history of "putting Texas' families first" and said she has a "stellar record on LGBT equality."
"Wendy Davis has been a champion of equality for all, whether it is the working poor or LGBT Texas," HRC President Chad Griffin said. "Her dedication to the underdog and commitment for fairness for all Texas families make her the right choice for governor."
The rights organization also commended Davis for authoring and sponsoring legislation that prohibited employment discrimination in the state and protected LGBT students from bullying.
"Wendy Davis's energy and courage are needed in Austin," said Julie Johnson, Texas attorney and HRC board member emeritus. "I'm proud to be one of the tens of thousands of HRC members in Texas, and I know that Wendy will fight for all our families when elected. Wendy has proven herself an effective leader -- and that's exactly what the people of Texas need."
The statement was also critical of David's "likely opponent," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, for taking "anti-equality positions."
"Last year, Abbott argued that Texas cities offering domestic partner benefits to their workers are violating the state constitution and stood out as a vocal opponent of a San Antonio ordinance that protects LGBT people from discrimination in city employment, housing and public accomodations," the statement said.
The endorsement for Davis comes shortly after the Texas state senator got caught in a media firestorm after being accused of lying about her personal story, specifically at what age she became divorced and how long she lived in a trailer park for. Conservative outlets and Abbott's campaign team used the allegations to launch new attacks on Davis, prompting both of her daughters and ex-husband to defend her.
