Get $3,000 for Catching the Flu: National Institutes of Health's Newest Research Project Reimburses Big Time for Willing Participants

In exchange for getting the flu, here's $3,000.

You're welcome.

The National Institutes of Health is currently conducting a research project that gauges flu levels.

The federal biomedical agency is seeking out healthy folks between the ages of 18 and 50 years old to have the influenza virus injected into their noses, so researchers can study how the body copes with the infection at multiple phases.

Researchers at the NIH are reportedly looking at whether a particular kind of antibody in the blood changes peoples' chances of getting the flu.

The slight dosage of the flu virus only produces mild symptoms, but still is a risky endeavor.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that at least 200,000 United States citizens go to the hospital for flu symptoms every year. Thousands die at the hands of the sickness, according to the New York Daily News.

26-year-old volunteer Daniel Bennet said his mom chided the decision to purposely get the flu.

"I received a very scolding email from my mother," Bennet told the Daily News."Their standards are so high, I don't believe I'm in danger. I don't get sick that often."

Each person who participates in the study, which is taking place in various areas of Maryland, receives $3,000 for offering their health to the institute.
