Mother Shot Holding Baby: Fatal Bullet Hits Alabama Women in the Chest While Holding Her 10-Day Old Son

Family and friends are mourning the passing of 24-year old Sherri Williams who took a fatal bullet to the chest Monday while holding her 10-day old son, according to Alabama.com. Williams was standing in the doorway of her Birmingham apartment when she was shot. Her son was not harmed.

According to Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr. of the Birmingham Police, two men had gotten into an altercation at a restaurant near Williams’ apartment. One man proceeded to chase the other down the street shooting after him as the two ran.

"I can't say it was a stray bullet because a bullet doesn't have a name on it," said Kerry Jackson, Williams’ uncle.

According to Jackson, after being hit in the chest with the bullet, Williams fell onto a couch, still holding her newborn baby. She was already dead when police arrived on the scene.

William’s six-year old daughter was at school. However, her four-year old son was home. Her mother, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, was also in the home since her Williams had been taking care of her.

According to Jackson, Williams’ mother did not find out about the shooting until a neighbor hurried to the apartment and informed her of the tragic incident.

Jackson described his niece as a quiet individual who kept to herself and wanted to move out of the Gate City housing complex where she lived.

"For a long time she was trying to get out of here," Jackson said.

Police say that an arrest in connection with the shooting has not been made as of yet in. They are currently searching for an African American male wearing a white tank top and an African American female wearing a yellow shirt. The female is also missing some of her braids. The two individuals were last spotted in a black Chrysler Sebring.

Jackson asked anyone who may know the identity of the shooter to inform police.

"Just imagine if these kids would've been out here playing," he said. "All of the kids are out here, and someone could come through here shooting."
