R.I.P. Colonel Meow: Famous Long-Haired Cat Dies After Illness; Watch the Cat's Funny Moments (VIDEO)

Colonel Meow, the ferocious looking, long haired feline who went viral last year, passed away on Wednesday, his owner announced on the cat's Facebook page.

"Colonel Meow passed away yesterday evening," Ann Avey, wrote on Thursday. "I will post more about the details when I've had a few more days to grieve."

Colonel Meow, a gray Persian-Himalayan with excessively long hair, gained a massive Internet following when Avery and her husband posted pictures online of the cat's mug in late 2012, the International Business Times reported.

Nicknamed the "World's Angriest Cat," several pictures show Colonel Meow staring straight into the camera, sporting wild hair and an oddly murderous expression. Avery is also dubbed "Slave Beast," as homage to her cat's domineering looks.

"I just wake up every morning and I can barely think and I look over at him and he makes me laugh out loud," Avey previously told ABC News, according to the IBTimes. "It's one of those moments where every time I look at him I get a chuckle and I thought that should be shared with everybody."

Colonel Meow even won the Guinness World Record for having the longest cat fur in August 2013. News of his death left thousands of his followers, nicknamed "minions," in mourning. The post announcing his passing was shared over 29,500 times as of Friday afternoon.

"Thank you so much for your understanding, Minions. Your love and support has meant the world to us both.- Slave Beast," Avey wrote.

Avey announced in November 2013 that Colonel Meow was suffering from heart problems and had undergone a blood transfusion. The cat's "minions" raised over $20,000 to help cover his medical costs, the IBTimes reported.

Colonel Meow died at 2-years-old.

"May he dominate the afterlife and submit all there to his will..." Leela Cosgrove wrote on the cat's Facebook page.
