Authorities announced on Friday that two suspects connected to the $700,000 Cartier heist in Manhattan were arrested, the New York Daily News reported.
Roberto Grant, 33, of Brooklyn, was charged with robbery and Allen Williams, 35, of Bedford-Stuyvesant, was charged with robbery and criminal possession of stolen property.
"[We] recovered some of the property, and our anticipation is we'll be able to solve a number of New York City cases as a result of that," NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said on Friday.
Police are still looking for at least three other male suspects, who altogether stole 16 watches from the high-end jewelry store on Thursday afternoon.
Bratton applauded the "extraordinarily great detective work" that led to discovering two suspects within one day of the robbery.
"Something like that in the heart of our shopping district is needless to say something we don't like to see," Bratton said.
"What I'm always amazed at is: How the hell did they get away? I don't think I can get a block up Fifth Ave. at any time of day without getting stopped for traffic at a red light. These guys made a clean getaway."
According to the New York Post, about a dozen workers and half dozen customers were inside the store during the break-in.
"It happened so fast that people didn't really know what was going on," a police source said to the Post. "They heard the smashing of the display case, but they thought it was an accident outside. And the perps ran out before the customers realized anything."
Before they arrived at Cartier, the group of robbers reportedly tried to steal from a Wempe jewelry store but were thrown out by a guard.
Kedar Nesby, a security employee at a nearby store, said the area is lacking in their protection from police this week due to Super Bowl festivies in other parts of the city.
